ABSTRACT

@#Objective To explore the effects of partial body weight support treadmill training (PBWSTT) combined with brain function therapy on walking ability of stroke patients. Methods 112 stroke patients with hemiplegia were randomly allocated into treatment group (n=57) and control group (n=55). The control group received routine rehabilitation training, while the treatment group received PBWSTT combined with brain function therapy in addition. They were assessed with lower limb's movement and balance function assessment of the Fugl-Meyer Assessment (FMA), Functional Ambulation Category (FAC), and Modified Barthel Index (MBI) before and after the treatment. Results The scores of FMA, FAC, and MBI improved more in treatment group than in control group after treatment (P<0.05). Conclusion Based on the conventional rehabilitation, PBWSTT combined with brain function therapy may improve the motor function of lower limb, balance function, walking ability, and ADL more significantly in stroke patients with hemiplegia.

ABSTRACT

@#: Objective To investigate the effects of exercise therapy on activity of daily living (ADL), perception of dyspnea and quality of life (QOL) in stable patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Methods 40 COPD stable patients accepted treadmill exercise for 8 weeks. 6-min walk test (6MWT), the parameters of cardiopulmonary exercise test, ADL, perception of dyspnea (Borg Scale), and St. George's respiratory questionnaire (SGRQ) were measured before and after exercise. Results ADLs in different levels (P<0.05), especially in higher level (P<0.01), were significantly improved in all patients after exercise. Perception of dyspnea (Borg Scale) was also improved significantly (P<0.01). There was positive correlation between ADL and QOL (r=0.455, P<0.01), but negative between dyspnea and QOL (r=-0.412,P<0.05). Conclusion Exercise therapy can improve the ADL and perception of dyspnea in daily activities in patients with COPD, as well as QOL.@*@#

ABSTRACT

@#ObjectiveTo observe the effects of Chinese Traditional Medical therapy of supplementing Qi, nourishing Yin and strengthening genuine Qi on hemiplegia after stroke.Methods102 cases of hemiplegic patients were divided into 2 groups randomly, observational group (52 cases) and control group (50 cases), who were all treated with routine medicine and early rehabilitation. Observational group accepted Shenqi Fuzheng Injection or Shengmai Injection according to their syndrome for 28 days. Before and after treatment (within 3 days), simple Fug-Meyer Assessment Scale, modified Barthel index and gait analysis were used to evaluate the function of motor, activity of daily living (ADL) and walking.ResultsBoth groups improved their function of upper and lower limb's movement, ADL and walking significantly (P<0.001) after treatment. Compared with the control group, except for motor of upper limps, the patients in observational group improved their function more significantly (P<0.05).ConclusionChinese Traditional Medical therapy of supplementing Qi, nourishing Yin and strengthening genuine Qi may help the recovery of hemiplegia after stroke.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To provide informations on contributing factors analysis for the driving status in spinal cord injured people through basic statistics from an analysis of the survey results. METHOD: The survey was administered to 121 spinal cord injured persons with no evidence of head injury. Subjects were divided to driver group and non-driver group and compared to their general charateristics, neurologic characteristics, status of activity of daily living (ADL). Logistic regression was used to analyze contributing factors for the driving status. RESULTS: Forty-four (36.4%) of 121 respondents were driving and among them male drivers were 35 (79.6%). The average age and the age at the time of injury were lower in the driver group than non-driver group. Among complete lesions, C7 was the highest level who could drive independently. The mean score of ADL was significantly higher in the driver group than non-driver group. The significant factors that affect the driving of spinal cord injured persons were sex, age, age at the time of injury, Frankel type, motor score, jobs after their injury, compensations for their accidents, means of ambulation, sports activities, and ADL status. Especilly significant factors were age at the time of injury, means of ambulation, ADL status. CONCLUSION: We suggested that the driver training should be an essential part of the rehabilitaion program for the spinal cord injured people to maximize their quality of life in the community.
